Paul gestured wildly and pointed past me. I spun round in the strong current which was shooting us along the virgin reef at a serious rate of knots and stared out into the endless blue looking for whatever had got him so excited. All I could see was blue water and empty reef, save for a couple of gigantic barrel sponges and a large black rock. I looked back and shrugged my shoulders. He was now swimming hard against the current trying to maintain position, and pointing frantically. I looked back again and this time saw what he’d spotted. The black rock wasn’t a rock at all, it was the most gigantic turtle I had ever seen. Sadly, we were too far downcurrent to get in for a closer look and I cursed the fact I’d missed out on a great photo opportunity. It’s not every day you see a turtle the size of a family hatchback! Next minute, Paul was pointing down below me. I looked and saw another large green turtle. However, he was a little camera shy and by the time I’d got him in my viewfinder, he’d taken off. I heard a frantic rattling from Paul and turned just in time to drift over the top of yet another huge turtle.
